Where are the Cherokee today?

The federally recognized Cherokee Nation has a 7,000 square mile jurisdictional area in fourteen counties of Northeastern Oklahoma. It is not a reservation. The Eastern Band of Cherokee, also recognized by the federal government, holds 56,000 acres within the Qualla Boundary of western North Carolina. The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees in Northeastern Oklahoma were extended a Corporate Charter by the U.S. Congress. The tribe is organized to be recognized as the original government of the Cherokees and as required by the federal government to possess un-allotted lands belonging to the Cherokee Indians.
