ARE YOU CHEROKEE?

Our free research assistance helps people to overcome obstacles in tracing their Cherokee ancestry. We will also assist you in obtaining the documentation needed to support applications for tribal citizenship.

The Cherokee Heritage Documentation Center also offers the only recognition process for descendants of those individuals who surrendered their citizenship, or who “disappeared” from earlier rolls.

FINDING LOST INFORMATION

We are developing software that places information from thousands of family histories in "layers" over extensive historical data to create a patchwork view of history. This can help fill in gaps family genealogies that would not otherwise be possible.

In addition, stories, memories, and oral history contributed by our members are continuously matched against other submissions. When similar events or life experiences are found those members are notified and provided with a link to view the information.

CERTIFICATE OF
CHEROKEE HERITAGE

Recognition of families whose ancestors were a part of the history of the Cherokee people is important to us. This certificate is a means for these descendants to display pride in their heritage. There is no blood quantum or tribal citizenship eligibility requirement.

There are many people who are not tribal members but can document their ancestry to earlier generations who were Cherokee citizens. Some ancestors lost their citizenship as a result of various decisions they made about marriage or where they lived. We offer the only recognition process for descendants of those individuals who separated from the tribe, or who “disappeared” after earlier rolls. [JOIN US]

A "Digital Time-capsule" is a way to preserve the stories, images, genealogy, and other information about your Cherokee linage and make it available to someone of your choice at specified date in the future. You might even consider saving it for someone who is yet to be born! In only a short period of time VHS tapes, audio tapes, floppy disks, and even CD's are becoming more and more difficult to retrieve information from. Documents saved in many popular word processing formats can no longer be read by typical software versions today. Natural and man-made disasters often destroy both physical and digital collections of family photos and history. A digital time-capsule is a way to leave your legacy behing in the way you want it presented and to those you want to have it. Content is redundantly stored in the most secure means possible for preservation and to ensure long-term viability. This "eternal" storage is modeled on concepts of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) and recommended practices of ISO 16363:2012.
