How do I know what clan I belong to?
The Cherokee society is matrilineal, meaning that the family, or clan, line runs through the mother. If your mother is Cherokee, you belong to her clan. If the knowledge of the clan is not known, then your clan, unfortunately, has been lost.
There are no tribal records regarding clanship, as your clan is kept private for spiritual reasons.
There is a possibility of clan adoption, under appropriate circumstances.
The seven Cherokee clans are:
Anigilohi, or Long Hair
Aniwodi, or Paint
Anitsisqua, or Bird
Aniwaya, or Wolf
Anigotegewi, or Wild Potato
Aniawi, or Deer
Anisahoni, or Blue
